  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from R. Lee Hadden -- A practical guide for gifted and talented teachers. : An excellent book on educating gifted children in middle school. Based on thirty years of teaching, the practical aspects of the book are enjoyable. Problems arising from development and gender issues and family entanglements are discussed, and good ways of handing various problems are given. Anxiety, depression and underachievement among gifted students are examined, and solutions for education and development are offered. I particularly liked one statement: "The most important next step is to look closely at your own students and identify the areas over which you have control to determine what's getting in their way and yours." • 5.0 out of 5 stars from huelskamp1 -- Definitely a Practical Guide : Finally, I have something I will be referencing often. It is, indeed, practical for parents, teachers, administrators, and those in higher education. Comprehensive AND highly approachable, the 11 chapters give a clear overview of current literature and address all the timely topics we face in supporting this population. The author’s examples mirror my own experience teaching gifted middle schoolers for 29 years and show she’s ‘been in the trenches.’ Her tone is warm and real - reminiscent of a comfortable conversation with a mentor embedded within research-based best practices. I particularly liked that she included first person accounts in each chapter entitled ‘Real School, Real Solutions’ that gave insight into how practitioners are incorporating these practices. I now have some new research-supported strategies to try out this year. I appreciate that each chapter begins with “Key Questions” providing guidance and a focal point for reflection. Each chapter ends with “Next Step: Take Action.” The suggestions speak to all of us connect to gifted adolescents and are manageable giving the reader a feeling of empowerment. I felt refreshed and re-focused after reading this book. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Paua Olszewski-Kubilius -- Great Resource for Parents and Teachers of Young Adolescents : to parents, particularly if they are concerned about keeping their child on track during this critical developmental period. There are few books on this period of development and schooling and this book definitely fills that gap. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from James R. Delisle -- Nothing beats first-hand experience! : Too many books written about gifted students are written by those whose experiences are far removed from actually teaching these kids in a classroom context. That is not the case with this book...and the content of "Educating gifted students in middle school" shows throughout its 350 pages that its author's first-hand teaching experiences have guided the development of this book. Filled with both practical examples and first-hand analysis of what works with gifted adolescents (and what does not...), this book is also rich with research-based suggestions, making this volume even more valuable. (It is obvious that Dr. Rakow 's time spent learning from Dr. Gordon Vars--a pioneer in middle child education-- was valuable time, indeed.) What I appreciated most about this book is its inclusivity, providing valuable and timely information on topics related to gifted middle school kids' development apart from curriculum and instruction. The topics of underachievement, personal identity, twice exceptionality and others are reviewed purposefully and compassionately, making this book one that will benefit school counselors and therapists, as well as front-line educators. I recommend this book highly to anyone whose lives converge with gifted adolescents. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2020 )
